YOUR FIRST VISIT

What to expect when you reach out

Most first sessions are 45–55 minutes; ongoing sessions are typically 45 minutes. There are no packages or long-term commitments — you get the support you need for as long as it’s helpful.

1

Reach Out

You request an appointment online or by phone. Our intake coordinator learns what you’re looking for and matches you with the therapist best suited to your needs — not a random assignment.

2

First Session

Your therapist listens to your history, what brought you in, and what you’re hoping for. This first conversation is about understanding you and building a comfortable, judgment-free space — nothing is rushed.

3

Your Plan

Together, you set goals and agree on an approach that fits your situation, drawing on evidence-based methods like CBT and solution-focused therapy. You’ll understand what you’re working on and why.

4

Ongoing Progress

Your progress is revisited regularly and the approach adjusts as you grow. You continue for as long as it’s helpful — there’s no fixed program that runs past the point it’s serving you.

CONDITION GUIDE

Relationship guides from our therapists

Relationships

Signs of a Controlling Husband And How Therapy Can Help

A controlling husband uses patterns of behavior — threats, isolation, guilt, jealousy, and consistent dismissal of your feelings — to maintain power in a relationship. These patterns are a form of emotional abuse.

Relationships

Gaslighting in Relationships amd how therapy can help

Gaslighting is a form of emotional abuse in which one partner manipulates the other into doubting their own memory, perception, or judgment. It builds gradually — small dismissals and denials that grow into a pattern of control.

Relationships

How Therapy Helps with Communication Breakdown

Communication breakdown happens when patterns of defensiveness, shutdown, or emotional distance replace honest dialogue. Therapy helps by identifying the triggers behind those patterns, teaching active listening and clear expression, and healing the unresolved wounds that block connection.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions about

our services

Straightforward answers to what clients ask most before their first visit for therapy.

CPA Counseling offers a full range of therapy for individuals, couples, and families — including anxiety treatment, depression therapy, trauma therapy, relationship and marriage counseling, Gottman Method couples therapy, family therapy, child and adolescent therapy, and addiction counseling. Services are available in person at our four Pennsylvania offices and through secure telehealth statewide, so you can find the right support close to home or from wherever you are.

Both. Every service can be provided in person at our South Hills (McMurray), Robinson Township, Altoona, or Philadelphia office, or through secure video telehealth anywhere in Pennsylvania. Many clients mix the two depending on their week. Telehealth makes it easier to stay consistent with therapy around work, childcare, travel, or distance, without giving up the quality of care you’d get in the room.

You don’t have to figure it out alone. When you request an appointment, our intake coordinator learns what you’re looking for and matches you with the therapist best suited to your needs, specialty, and location — it’s never a random assignment. You can also browse our team to read individual bios and specialties. If the fit isn’t right, we’ll help you find someone who is.

CPA Counseling accepts several major insurance plans, and we’re glad to help you understand your coverage before your first session. Because plans and networks change, we recommend confirming your specific benefits with us or your insurer directly. If you’re paying out of pocket or have questions about cost, reach out — we’ll walk you through your options so finances aren’t a barrier to getting started.

Most services are offered across all four offices and via telehealth, but individual therapists and specialties vary by location. For example, some clinicians focus on couples work, others on children and adolescents or trauma. The easiest way to confirm availability near you is to request an appointment and tell us what you need — we’ll match you with the right therapist at the right office.

Getting started is simple. Request an appointment online or call us at 412-439-1416. Our intake coordinator will ask a few questions about what you’re looking for, answer any questions about insurance or scheduling, and match you with a therapist. There’s no long-term commitment and no pressure — just a first conversation to see how we can help you move forward.
